Group

We study how medical AI agents learn from clinical expertise, perform in realistic settings, reason across longitudinal and multimodal evidence, and support the people making and communicating medical decisions.

The group brings together natural language processing, health informatics, and clinical expertise. We work closely with clinicians, patients, and researchers so that the problems we study—and the ways we evaluate progress—remain connected to medical practice.

Prior mentees

Prospective members

I plan to recruit PhD students in the iSchool and Computer Science, as well as master's students in Computer Science, beginning in Fall 2027. We also host summer research interns at UIUC. Please apply before January for the following summer so there is enough time to complete visa arrangements, if needed.

Research fit

I am looking for people who are genuinely curious about AI in medicine and want to spend sustained time on questions that matter to clinicians, patients, and researchers. Students often bring either strong machine-learning and coding skills or clinical and biomedical training; both paths are valued. What matters most is the ability to think critically about why a problem is important, what a result means, and where a method fails.

How we work

Mentoring changes as students grow. I provide close guidance early, including technical and implementation details when useful, and step back as students develop confidence and independence. We value rigorous methods, clear communication, consistent engagement, kindness, and respect. A student's success is a shared success for the group.

Applying

If you plan to name me as a potential PhD or master's advisor, please complete the prospective-student form. For summer internships, independent studies, or research collaborations, use the collaboration form. I do not respond to recruitment inquiries sent by email; please use the appropriate form.
